Peter Churchman Peter has been a barrister sole since September 2005. Since commencing practice in 1980 he has acquired a reputation as one of the country's leading advocates. He has appeared as lead counsel in many major cases in the areas of employment law, civil litigation, resource management, public law and criminal law. He has wide experience as counsel at both trial and appellate levels including regular appearances as lead counsel in the Court of Appeal. He has also successfully appeared in the Privy Council and Supreme Court. His practice extends throughout the country in the areas of Employment Law and Civil Litigation. He is regularly briefed to appear for New Zealand's largest corporates, government departments and public sector bodies. Peter taught law on a part-time basis for many years and has also published books and articles on various legal topics including the Chapter on Rating in Laws of New Zealand. He is co author of Brookers Personal Grievance and a contributing author to Brookers Personal Injury in New Zealand. In 1990 Peter was appointed by the Solicitor General as a member of the Crown Panel for Dunedin and, for the next decade, regularly prosecuted District Court and High Court jury trials for the Crown. He has been commissioned by the Department of Labour on two separate occasions to advise on issues of potential law reform. In 1997 he was commissioned to provide a report on the feasibility of introducing “good faith” as a statutory obligation and in 2000 he was retained to assist in preparing a draft “code of good faith” should the Government’s social partners not be successful in agreeing upon such a code. Peter has appeared before numerous Select Committees making submissions in relation to proposed legislation. From time to time, Peter has been appointed to undertake investigations and inquiries on behalf of various public bodies. Peter has been engaged by the Law Society to present three national seminars and has undertaken two such seminars for the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants. Peter was a member of the New Zealand Law Society Employment Law Committee from May 2000 being Convenor from May 2001 until April 2006. He has been a Faculty Member on the New Zealand Law Society Litigation Skills Programme on many occasions commencing 1998 and of the NZLS Advanced Litigation Skills Programme and on the Expert Witness course since 2006. He has been commissioned by leading law publishers to write texts on the areas of Labour and Local Authority law, published a number of articles in refereed periodicals and journals. Peter was invited by the University of Otago to teach Labour Law (1991-2000) and the Law of Civil Procedure (1984-1987). He was a Partner at Caudwells in Dunedin 1985 – 2000 and at Kensington Swan in Wellington 2000 – 2005.
